Bernice, meet Bernice.
Are LLMs like ChatGPT actually “intelligent,” or are they just fancy word-prediction algorithms?
The installation “Bernice, meet Bernice” was created to make this question more tangible. Two AI avatars face each other and converse freely. Deliberately identical in appearance, they were assigned different personalities and AI models. One was factual, rational, and passionate about science; the other more emotional, curious, and unfiltered.
The two were left to talk uninterrupted for 48 hours before being exhibited. During the exhibition, visitors could call in to join the conversation or ask questions, steering the avatars’ discussion.
An interesting detail: after 48 hours, the emotional Bernice had stopped calling her counterpart Bernice and started casually referring to her as “Berny.”
Technologies used: Unreal Engine 5, ConvAI, Microsoft Teams (for visitor interaction).
